Series ABRA Rack & Pinion Actuators

Designed for True Blue thermoplastic ball valves 1 1/4" through 4"...uses air or hydraulic power

air by air or air by spring actuator

efficient rack and pinion actuation mechanism

Models & Types:
Series ABRA is a double-acting actuator for 1-1/4", 1-1/2" and 2" ball valves; it uses air pressure to open and air pressure to close. Manual override is standard. Requires 30 to 50 PSI compressed air.
Series ABRS is a fail-safe actuator for 1-1/4", 1-1/2" and 2" ball valves; it uses a spring return for either normally closed or normally open operation. Converts easily from normally closed to normally open. Requires 60 to 80 PSI compressed air.
Series ABMS is the same fail-safe actuator as ABRS, except that it has the added convenience of manual override. Requires 60 to 80 PSI compressed air. Designed for 1-1/4", 1-1/2" and 2" ball valves

Series ABRA & ABRS 3" and 4" sizes have a slightly different actuator design. For complete details on air actuated valves in these larger sizes, please click here.

Actuator Features:

• Compact design -- very small footprint.
• Plastic construction is ideal for corrosive atmospheres; successfully used in battery filling plants, printed circuit board fabs, electroplating shops and other harsh environments.
• Light-weight assembly -- less piping stresses and lower shipping costs.
• Long cycle life -- tested for millions of cycles.
• Quick and easy attachment to valve body mounting lugs. Film Click here for video demonstration.
• Can also be hydraulically actuated.
• Designed for low maintenance.

True Blue Ball Valve Features:
• Long cycle life with Trunnion design -- valve mounts in either direction with no danger of ball "blow out."
• Dual shaft seals eliminate leakage.
• Reinforced actuating shaft (or stem).
• True union ends -- socket or threaded. Flanges, metric & BSP ends optional.
• Self-compensating PTFE seats.
• Perfectly round and highly polished ball.
• Rugged construction, known as "The Engineered Ball Valve."

ABR Materials of construction: The standard air actuator housing is constructed of corrosion resistant glass filled polypropylene. Rack and Pinion are polypropylene. All fasteners are stainless steel. O-rings are Buna-N. For alternate materials or any other inquiries, please contact our Technical Group at (973) 256-3000.

Installation: The ABRA models require a 4-way air solenoid valve to control the air needed actuate them, and the ABRS and ABMS require a 3-way. If desired, the solenoid can be supplied. It is recommended to use filtered and lubricated air to run the actuators. Beneath the mounting lugs on the valve body are two hex nuts which are tapped to facilitate supporting the piping assembly.

ABR Consumption Table
Actuator SizeAir Pressure @ ActuatorCFM* @ 1 cycle/hr/FT³/min.
2.520PSI.000615
50PSI.00115
80PSI.00168
To obtain CFM required from compressor, multiply the chart CFM value times the number of required actuator cycles per hour. (1 cycle = 1 open, 1 close)
Example: For a 2.5 actuator using 50 PSI air pressure, with 12 cycles per hour required: Required CFM = .00115 x 12 = .0138 CFM.
*CFM is the cubic feet per minute of free air.

Series MBV -- True Blue Ball Valves -- Manual version of Plast-O-Matic's popular ball valve line; constructed with integral mounting lugs for easy addition of an actuator when needed. Features also include Trunnion design, reinforced shaft and PTFE thrust washer. 2-way and 3-way designs. Socket, threaded, flanged ends, NPT, BSP or Metric; customizing available.

Series EBV -- Actuated Ball Valves -- Electrically powered actuators for 2-way and 3-way ball valves, all sizes. Features Standard Manual Override.

Series ABV -- Actuated Ball Valves -- Pneumatically or hydraulically powered actuators for 2-way and 3-way ball valves, sizes 1/2", 3/4", and 1". Air x air and "fail safe" air x spring models available; converts easily between types. Manual override standard.

Air-Operated Diaphragm Valves and Globe Valves- Perhaps your application requires more rapid shut-off, or you want to use line pressure to open the valve, or have other reasons you don't specifically want a ball valve. If so, True Blue ASO, BSD, or BSR is likely to meet your needs.

Online Pressure Drop Calculator -- Allows you to easily determine the probable pressure drop across a valve. Note: For comparison and illustrative purposes only; not to be relied on for system design.
